Subjective safety is influenced by the social cohesion in the neighbourhood, when a lack of cohesion influences the residents’ perceptions of security. Residents who do not perceive themselves to be safe are less resilient to crime, subversive crime, nuisance, and intimidation.

Although the perceptions of security (subjective safety) have improved slightly over the past years, the overall perception in Maastricht is still worse than the average in the G-32 municipalities.
